What are the self care methods to manage Herpes Zoster Oticus?

Most of us ignore very simple precautions that everyone can easily practice in their daily routine. We believe that self-care methods are useful to diminish the discomfort of patients with Herpes Zoster Oticus (Ramsay Hunt Syndrome).

Please find below TO DO LIST that may help you to cope with Herpes Zoster Oticus:

  • Keep areas affected by the rash clean.
  • Apply cool, wet compresses to the rash to manage the pain.
  • Get below the mentioned OTC drugs within the pharmacy:
    • pain reliever
    • anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen
      • Advil
      • Motrin & others).
  • If you have facial weakness, use the unaffected side of your mouth for chewing.
  • Brush your teeth after the meals (practice good oral hygiene, especially after eating)
  • Do not push yourself so hard, get plenty of rest.

Sometimes facial weakness may bring difficulty to patients to close one of their eyes. At this time please find below the necessary steps to protect patient’s vision:

  • Advice patients to apply moisturizing eyedrops throughout the day if their eye becomes dry.
  • At night, ask them to apply ointment to the eye and tape their eyelid shut, or tell them to wear an eye patch.
