What are the Signs and symptoms of Herpes Zoster Oticus?

  • Facial muscle weakness (palsy)
  • Severe pain in
    • Ear
    • Head
    • Neck
  • Painful red rash on your;
    • Eardrum
    • Outside the ear
    • External ear canal
    • Palate that is the roof of your mouth
    • Tongue
  • A painful herpes type skin eruption on the pinna of the ear.
  • Dizziness because of the frequent vestibulo-cochlear disturbance
  • Disturbance of hearing
  • Rash which is outbreak of red bumps on the body around the;
    • Ear
    • Face
    • Scalp
    • Neck
  • Paralysis of facial nerves
  • A 'drooping' of the face in the affected side.
  • Inability to smile
  • Smile may look crooked
  • Having trouble while trying to close the eye
  • Tearing of the eye ( because of difficulty in closing it )
  • The patient’s speech may be mildly slurred.
  • Hyperacusis  where the sounds may come louder on the affected side
  • Vertigo
  • Papillitis
  • Hearing loss ( usualluy on one side)
  • Inability to wrinkle the forehead
  • Tinnitus ( ringing in your ears)
  • Herpetic blisters (small, painful blisters in the mouth)
  • Inability to whistle
  • Taste loss
  • Alterations in taste perception
  • Dry mouth
  • Neuralgia
  • Very rare meningoencephalitis
